With the effects of developing industrial industry, one of the most used paraben class; the
propyl paraben (propyl 4-Hydroxybenzoate), is widely used in many products because of
their low toxicity, physical and chemical stability, wide spectrum activity, worldwide
admitted applications, biosolubility, preventing from mold and yeast and their low cost.
In this study it will undertake to understand the antiandrogenic effects of propyl paraben
on the 6-weeks old castrated male Wistar albino rats. Due to aim of investigating the
antiandrogenic effects of propyl paraben on the male reproductive tracts, the 10-days
Hershberger Bioassay has chosen. After the 10-days treatment period, the evaluation of
weights of accessory tissues of the male reproductive tracts, body and weights plus food
and water consumption were recorded. The LH and FSH hormone levels and hematologic
results had also analyzed.
As a result of the comparative analytical studies, there was a decrease in androgenic tracts
and liver tissues weights, increase in serum LH levels and atrophic aspects on
histopathological endpoints on 250 mg/kg/day of propyl paraben dose. These specific
findings strongly indicate that propyl paraben, an antimicrobial preservative, has an
antiandrogenic activity.
