Yabancı/İkinci Dil Olarak Türkçe Konuşma Becerisinin Yedi İklim B1 Düzeyi Ders Materyalleri Üzerinden Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

In a foreign/second language teaching process, it can be seen that a major part of the in-class implementations is provided through the activities presented in the course materials. This can clarify why the level of effectiveness of the course materials is also important to determine how productive a lesson will be. Bearing in mind that speaking skill has become even more important within the current developments in foreign language teaching, it can be stated that it has become a controversial issue how efficacious the course materials are, regarding their function and communicativeness. With this study, it has been aimed at evaluating how well the speaking activities in Yunus Emre Institute Teaching Turkish Set Yedi İklim B1 level course book correspond with the criteria of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) that has already been a reliable reference text. In the scope of this study, based on the speaking skill descriptors, self-assessment grids, speaking activities illustrative scales and the views on acquiring communicative competence covered in CEFR, 49 speaking activities in Yedi İklim B1 level course book have been analyzed, then the types of the activities and their level of interaction and communicativeness have been described by means of the qualitative designed observations. The findings obtained from the analysis have shown that the majority of the activities in the course book which have been analyzed merely focus on the spoken production, and the speaking activities with a good coverage of interaction and communication context are few in number. Based on the data, it has been found out that there is a strong correlation between the activity type within the way it is applied and the acquisition of the communicative competence which is considered in CEFR as the most important goal of teaching a language. In this context, it can be said that a big portion of the speaking activities in Yedi İklim B1 level course book is not convenient enough to improve the communicative competence.
