Including nuclear energy as a source of energy is extremely important for Turkey to meet this growing electricity demand and reduce the risks that result from dependency on imported fuels.
To prevent accidents and mitigate the consequences of accidents, nuclear power plants require a special safety regime, unlike other power generation plants and industrial sites. This safety approach begins with analytical work for site selection and evaluation. Nuclear safety and criteria based on this approach should be evaluated not only in the construction, operation, and decommissioning stage, but also during the site selection process.
The main objective of this study is to define a set of criteria to identify suitable sites to build a nuclear power plant and reveal suitable areas using geographical information systems via spatial analysis based on this criterion. In the application phase many criteria like capable faults, seismicity and presence of cooling water are represented by spatial objects in GIS and the study area is scored according to these criteria. In the decision making process weighted linear combination method is used as decision rule for the determination of suitable areas.
As a result of the study, seven sites which could be suitable for installation of a nuclear power plant in the Western Black Sea Region have been identified and an approach has been developed for the use of GIS as an effective tool in the field of site selection for nuclear power plants.
