An Analysıs of the Turkısh Translatıon of Cultural Elements in O’Brıen’S at Swım-Two-Bırds
Abstract
This study aims to demonstrate the use of domestication and foreignization methods in the translation of cultural elements in the Turkish translation of Flann O’Brien’s At Swim-Two-Birds (2012) entitled Ağaca Tüneyen Sweeney (2014) based on Venuti’s (1995) perspective. First, the microstrategies used in translating cultural elements are determined based on Anne Schjoldager’s (2010) taxonomy of translation strategies. Then how the use of these microstrategies leads to domestication or foreignization is elaborated. Finally, possible reasons for these decisions of the translator are discussed. It has been found that the translator has adopted the domesticating translation method in the translation of 43 cultural elements out of 59 cultural elements and adopted the foreignizing translation method in the translation of 16 cultural elements. She has created a work that both offers a fluent and natural reading experience and allows the readers to enjoy the taste of a foreign culture.
