Industrial wastewater causes serious environmental pollution in many parts of the
world.
Synthetic azo dyes, one of the pollutants causing this, are widely used in the
textile industry. Azo dyes are difficult molecules to degrade due to their complex
structures.
In recent years, many studies have been carried out using microorganisms for
biosorption and biodegradation of dye-containing wastewaters. The biological
remediation of the dyes is economical, effective and harmless compared to other

In this study, the color removal of Reactive Black 5 (RB-5), Reactive Green 19
(RG-19), Reactive Brown 10 (RB-10) and Solochrome Black (SB) dyes was
investigated using Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Chlorella vulgaris. The
study was carried on with P. chrysosporium since no effective result was obtained
from Chlorella vulgaris produced in the BBM (Bold Basal Medium) medium. It was
obtained with P. chrysosporium at the Tien-Kirk feeder, Reactive Black 5, 92.5%, among the best color removal rate tested. Decolorization rates of other dyes were
determined as 83% for RG-19, 63% for RB-10 and 63% for SB. For this reason,
the experiment has been diluted with RB-5 and Tien-Kirk media.
The effects of parameters such as dye concentration, pH, temperature, agitation
speed, N and C sources on color removal were investigated. Color removal is
measured spectrophotometrically. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS
15 Software. As a result of the work done, Reactive Black 5, Reactive Brown and
Solochrome Black dyes showed maximum color clearance at the end of the third
day, while Reactive Green, maximum decolorization was observed at the end of
the fifth day.
Among the parameters tested in the optimization studies, the best decolorization
was observed at a pH 4.5, a shaking speed of 150 rpm and a temperature of 30
oC. Among the tested carbon sources, the best color removal was observed in the
nutrient-free medium, in starch-containing medium and in nitrogen-rich medium.
According to the results obtained from this study, it is concluded that Phosphate
RB-5 dye of Phanerochaete chrysosporium is very effective on color removal.
