The aim of this thesis is to present an analysis of Butler and Irigaray's critique of Psychoanalysis. The impact of Lacanian law and symbolic order on gender identities is analyzed from the perspective of both thinkers. In the first part, Irigaray's theory of sexual difference and its relation to psychoanalysis are discussed and her criticisms of femininity, phallus-centrism and the body are presented. In the second part, what sex and gender are in Butler's theory and how gender is constructed in Freud and Lacan's theories are discussed. The opposing positions of Irigaray and Butler against the law imposed by symbolism are analyzed.
