With the new understanding of education, the importance of 21st Century skills has been emphasized by researchers, experts, educators, and policy makers. Social and emotional skills are the basic components of these skills. In this age, where social and emotional skills are becoming more important so studies on this subject and using proper methods are also important. In this direction, the answers given by 10-year-old students in the Türkiye sample in the Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) conducted by OECD in 2019 and some predictive variables that social and emotional skills were examined using structural equation modeling. In OECD’s survey, skills are classified as engaging with others, open-mindedness, collaboration, emotional regulation, and task performance skills areas based on the five-factor personality theory. These variables were determined as predictive variables of social and emotional skills: sense of belonging to school, relations with teachers, relations with parents, relations with friends, bullying, well-being, and socioeconomic level. For SEM, data obtained from SSES student surveys were arranged and 2694 students were included in the analysis.
The analysis revealed this conclusions the relations with teachers significantly explain this skills areas the open-mindedness, collaboration, task performance, and engaging with others; bullying significantly explains this skills areas the emotional regulation and collaboration; relations with friends significantly explains this skills areas the task performance and collaboration; socio-economic status significantly explains this skills areas the collaboration, open-mindedness and engaging with others; and the senses of belonging to school, relations with parents, and well-being significantly explain all skills areas.
