In this study, the daily life of women in the printed Ottoman-Turkish novel published between 1851 and 1900 was examined. In this context, one hundred and twenty-one novels published in book form in the nineteenth century, especially the works of Ahmet Mithat, Fatma Aliye, Mehmet Celal, Vecihî, Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, were examined. With modernization, women's daily lives and routines began to change. The daily life of women, which was described more superficially in the early novels of the nineteenth century, began to diversify and expand from home to outside the home towards the end of the century.
In the thesis, women's daily life is examined within the framework of three main sections. In the first part, the roles in which women appear in the novels and the impact of these roles on their daily lives are evaluated. In this context, mother, wife, child, sister, lover, nanny and all female roles, large and small, are emphasized. The power and conflict that arise in connection with these roles are handled by focusing on women fighting for the same man, daughter-in-law-mother-in-law, mother-daughter, mother-son. In the second part, the subject of domestic life, where women spent most of their time in early novels, was examined. Household chores, household management, responsibilities towards the husband, child care, taking care of the elderly, cleaning-cooking-table preparation, which constitute the daily life of women, are emphasized. In addition, a woman's own room in the house is discussed according to her age, position in the house, and whether she is married or single. Women's leisure activities at home in the time they have left over from housework have been examined in detail, such as reading, organizing various domestic entertainments, sewing-embroidery, gardening, watching the street, and spending time with music. The third chapter focuses on the presence of women in public life. Women's presence in public sphere, thanks to their in-home and out-of-home education, neighbourhood, travel, shopping and working life, and their daily life in recreation and excursion areas, rural life and other public spheres are revealed. In the nineteenth century novel, it is seen that the daily life of women, which started at home, was shaped according to the roles they had, and at the end of the century it expanded outside the home, and with the influence of modernization, life inside and outside the home became diversified.
