The aim of this study is to investigate the factors thought to be associated with the development of interpersonal dependency tendency in the context of Schema Therapy Model that is based on early life experiences. The sample of the study consists of 618 students (386 women, 232 men) attending different universities in Istanbul. Young Parenting Inventory (YPI), Young Schema Inventory- Short Form 3 (YSQ-SF3), Interpersonal Dependency Inventory, and Demographic Information Form were used to measure the variables investigated in the scope of this study. In line with the research questions, the relationships between sociodemographic variables and interpersonal dependency tendency were examined at first. After, the associations between the variables in the study (perceived parenting styles, early maladaptive schemas, interpersonal dependency tendency) and the gender differences in terms of these variables were investigated. The results indicated that there are significant correlations between the variables of the study at different levels. Also, there are significant gender differences in terms of these variables. In the final part, the mediating role of early maladaptive schema domains in the relationship between perceived parenting styles and interpersonal dependency tendency was examined for men and women separately. The results of the study, in general, support the Schema Therapy Model. According to the results, impared autonomy and other-directedness schema domains mediated the relationship between normative, overprotective, conditional/achievement focused, pessimistic/worried, punitive, and restricted/emotionally inhibited parenting perceptions and interpersonal dependency tendency among both men and women. Furthermore, impared autonomy and other-directedness schema domains had a mediator role in the relationship between belittling/criticizing parenting perceptions and interpersonal dependency tendency among only women; on the other hand, impared autonomy and other-directedness schema domains had a mediator role in the relationship between overpermissive/boundless parenting perceptions and interpersonal dependency tendency among only men. To conclude, the results of the current study point out that early maladaptive schema domains have a mediating role in the relationship between perceived parenting styles and interpersonal dependency tendency.
