36-72 Aylık Çocukların Ev Matematik Ortamlarının İncelenmesi
Özet
There are some factors that affect children's mathematics achievement in later ages. One of the factors affecting children's math skills is the math environment of the home. In this context, "In this context, answers to the questions "What is the home math environment of 36–72-month-old children?" and "What are the parent's perceptions of their children's math skills?" were sought. Within the scope of the research, the reliability and construct validity of the scores obtained from the "Home Numeracy Environment Scale (HNE)" developed by Niklas et al. (2016) and the "Mathematics Proficiency Perceptions Scale (MPP-Scale)" developed by the researcher were examined with a sample group of parents (N: 375) and it was seen that they gave valid and reliable results. While parents often provide their children "building toys and blocks, math-based toys, math-based home activities, etc.", they likely provide limited "phone/tablet applications, television programs involving mathematical concepts, origami-based games/toys, etc." at home. According to the parents, children mostly participate in "counting/ organizing/ classifying objects, recognizing/matching shapes, putting objects in order, answering questions such as "How many objects are there?" activities etc.", besides, they participate less in activities like “playing with a calculator, using a map, using a calendar, etc.” According to the results of the hierarchical regression analysis, it was concluded that the age of the children and having their own room were significant indicators of the variance in both HNE-Scale and MPP-Scale total scores. At the same time, having previous preschool education was only a significant indicator of the variance in MPP-Scale, while the SES was only a significant indicator of the variance in HNE-Scale total scores. The path analysis made for the model established with "home numeracy environment, perceptions of mathematics proficiency, mathematics-based tools and mathematics-based activities," which are assumed to be variables of the home math environment, concluded that the models had acceptable fit indices.
