The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between political skill and organizational burnout with regard to the opinions of the teachers working at state secondary schools in Turkey. Participants were 218 teachers who teach at different state secondary schools in center of Yalova, Turkey. In order to identify political skill of teachers, Political Skill Inventory developed by Ferris et al. (2005) and adapted to Turkish by Özdemir ve Gören (2015) were used as materials respectively. Moreover, in order to identify the levels of organizational burnout of teachers, Burnout Measure developed by Pines and Aronson (1988) and adapted to Turkish by Çapri (2006) were used as materials respectively.
As a result of reliability analyses, two scales mentioned above were found to be reliable data collection tools. In order to analyze the data, mean, standard deviation, independent samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, (ANOVA), correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used with SPSS 20.0.
Findings of the study revealed that participants had an average political skill. However the results showed a non-significant relationship between political skill and gender, age, marital status, educational background, experience in profession and experience in the institution. On the other hand, participants weren’t found to have burnout and findings showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between burnout-gender and burnout-experience in profession. According to the findings, female teachers’ burnout levels were higher than males’. Furthermore, according to the findings burnout levels of teachers with 11-20 years of experience in profession were higher than teachers with 21 or more years of experience in profession.
Findings of the study showed that there is a negative, low and significant relationship between political skill and burnout. In addition, there was a relationship between political skill and its sub-dimensions. Regression analyses revealed that political skill is a significant predictor of burnout.
