Skapular Retraksiyon Egzersizlerinin Asemptomatik ve Subakromiyal Sıkışma Sendromu Olan Bireylerde Trapezius Kas Aktivasyonu Üzerine Etkisinin Karşılaştırılması
Abstract
This study was planned to determine upper, middle and lower part of the trapezius muscle activation during different scapular retraction exercises with elastic bands and to investigate the differences in trapezius muscle activation during this exercises among asymptomatic individuals and subacromial impingement syndrome. The study was performed with 22 patients with subacromial impingement syndrome and 22 asymptomatic individuals matched with age and sex. Activation of the upper, middle and lower parts of the trapezius muscle during six different scapular retraction exercises with moderate severity at different shoulder abduction angles was determined by electromyographic measurements. Muscle activations were calculated as the maximum voluntary isometric contraction percentage (MVIC). The severity of pain that may occur during the exercises was assessed by visual analogue scale. As a result of study; it has been observed that selected scapular retraction exercises produce 30-60% MVIC middle trapezius muscle activation. Upper and lower trapezius activations were changed between 10-30% MVIC during the exercises. Only the scapular retraction exercise performed on the shoulder 90º abduction, there was a high upper trapezius activation between 40-60% MVIC in both groups. The activation of all parts of the trapezius muscle during exercises was similar between the groups (p>0.05). The pain level during the exercises was low. In this study, it was determined that selected exercises provide selective middle trapezius activation and as the shoulder abduction angle increased, all muscle activations increased. When choosing the scapular retraction exercise performed on the 90º abduction should be careful because of the upper trapezius activation is excessive. In addition, it may be necessary to choose different exercises particularly if lower trapezius muscle activation want to be increased, due to the low levels of this muscle activation in this study.
