Age determination has attracted the attention of many
scientists throughout history and studies have been carried out on this subject. When
the studies are examined, It has been observed that the examination of secondary
dentin deposition has become one of the frequently used parameters to determine
age from the teeth of adult individuals. Recently, studies using CBCT images have
increased and the results have been seem to be promising. In our study, the images
of 236 individuals aged between 18-70 years who applied to the of Hacettepe
University Faculty of Dentistry between 2019-2021 were analyzed retrospectively
and CBCT images with high diagnostic quality in accordance with the determined
criteria were included in the study. Maxillary central, lateral, canine and mandibular
canine, 1. premolar, 2. premolar teeth were selected for the study. The pulp/tooth
area ratio obtained from the cementoenamel junctional of the axial section of the
CBCT images was evaluated. Intra-observer and inter-observer consistency were
evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficient and the consistency was found to be
strong. When the correlation between determined age and chronological age was
evaluated by regression analysis, the relationship between pulp/tooth area ratios and
age was not found to be sufficient for age determination. Four different machine
learning algorithms were also used to evaluate the relationship of the obtained rates
with age. These models were evaluated with two different approaches as models that
try to determine age classes and models that try to determine the position of
chronological age according to the threshold age. Models were found to be low in
performance but they were considered as a different approach.
