Kes F.K. Evaluation of Satisfaction and Experience in Awake Intubation Patients, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Speciality Thesis, Ankara, 2022.
Awake fiberoptic intubation is considered the gold standard intubation method in patients who are expected to have a difficult airway. Patient experiences are important for the development of awake intubation technique and the improvement of patient care services
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the satisfaction and experiences in the postoperative period in patients who underwent awake intubation, which is an infrequent procedure.
After obtaining the ethics committee approval, patients who underwent awake intubation between June 2022 and July 2022 prospectively and observationally were visited in the service within the first 24 hours of the postoperative period, and their demographic information, socio-economic levels, trust in medical personnel, personality types, and concerns before the procedure were evaluated. A questionnaire was applied which is consisting of the relationships with the health personnel who performed the procedure, their feelings at the time of the procedure, the level how they remember the procedure and their considerations after the procedure. Data related to the type of sedation applied during the procedure, complications, route of intubation (oral/nasal), and the number of attempts of intubation, were obtained from the patient's electronic medical record.
There were 19 patients who were administered between June 2022 and July 2022. The median (lowest value – highest value) score of the patients for the general process related to the awake intubation procedure was 13 (6-15). The median score (range) of the patients' scores for the awake intubation procedure was 4 (2-5). A positive correlation was found between the trust of the patients in the healthcare personnel and the scores they gave to the general process and the awake intubation procedure. In addition, it was determined that there was a positive correlation between the scores of not being bothered to remember the procedure and re-accepting the procedure. Between the agreeableness and extraversion personality types and the scores they gave to the awake intubation procedure; between emotional stability personality type and pre-operative concern scores; It was found that there was a positive correlation between the consicentiousness personality type and the scores of understanding the reasoning for the awake intubation procedure.,
The results of this study showed that awake intubation is an acceptable experience for most patients.
Better explanation of the procedure to patients appears to be an important situation that has the potential to increase satisfaction. It is thought that the patient's control of the procedure can be increase, and the procedure can be made easier and more comfortable for the patient by methods such as providing informative and instructional materials about how to perform the procedure.
