Children's picture books are the most effective way to stimulate the child's sense perceptions in the preschool period, by providing the opportunity for visual reading. Concept development is important for the intellectual development of the child in this period. Children's picture books support concept development in children through visual reading. In this study, it is aimed to design an illustrated children's book that will support concept development in preschool children. Another aim of this study is to use mythological stories to support concept development. While aiming the development of various concepts in the child through the attractiveness of the chosen mythological story, it is also aimed to develop a sensitivity at an early age so that she is interested and curious about this mythology. Another important aim of this study is to prepare a mythological picture book that will contribute to closing this gap in the field, since there are enough stories about mythology in preschool children's picture books.
In the first part of the study, the origin of myths, the relationship between myth and fairy tale, and the relationship between myth and legend are discussed. After revealing the myth-legend relationship, examples from legends are given in this context. Then, the way the concepts from the ground are handled in mythological narratives are discussed through examples of death-life, fear-courage. The Simurg legend, which is the subject of this study, is examined as the last title of the first chapter in terms of the concepts it deals with and the way the Simurg legend takes place in different cultures.
In the second part of the study, the developmental stages of preschool children were examined. In order to prepare the children's picture book in accordance with the developmental level of the child; Child development is handled with its cognitive, linguistic, emotional and social aspects. In the next chapter, concept development in the preschool period and the effects of picture books on the concept development process are examined. In this section, it is ensured that the concepts to be conveyed in the children's picture book to be designed are selected in accordance with the reality of the child. Then, the types of children's books that appeal to the preschool period are examined. In the last chapter of this section, children's picture books are discussed in terms of form and content. The basic elements of the story to be created have been created in accordance with this section, and the elements to be considered in terms of form have been clarified.
In the third part of the study, examples of children's picture books dealing with abstract concepts are examined. Five different books, which contain different abstract concepts, positive and negative, are evaluated in accordance with the format and content criteria discussed in the previous section. In the second chapter of this section, examples from mythology-themed picture books designed for preschoolers are examined.
In the fourth chapter, it was decided to choose the concept of "anger" as the subject, and the story called "The journey of Ezo and Simurg" was created. The development stages of the story and the methods and techniques used during the design of the book are examined.
