In this thesis study, the concept of “ugliness” was taken on, not only by its first format, but also by its theoretical meaning. By taking as principal questions like what are the factors that affected esthetic perception of its period, how these affects effected the artist and his or her work, in the context of “plastic arts” how “ugliness” had a place of its own, it is researched iwth the examples of visual analysis and thought structures and it is liked to be supported by its study context.
Culture, art and pyhlosophy dwelled parallel subjects along the history. They’re –all three- affected from each other negatively or positively. Therefore, during thew whole thesis study these three are researched simultaneously.
There had been been different opinons and definitions on “beauty” and “ugliness” in every period. If these definitions are summarized; the concept of beauty carries a positive meaning and takes all the attention always. On the other hand the concept of ugliness cariies every negative meaning inside and leaves a negative effect.
Alough esthetic perception is relativei the thing that is not liked is always “ugly”. This concept, is used to define unliked subject, person, or even ideas in daily life. This concept which we use even use sometimes to determine abstract situations, is exceptionally accepted in concrete or formal art. The reason about that is generally “art needs to beatiful” thougt. Art must be peaceful. Colors must be harmonious, the perspective must be correct.
During the thesis study, art waves, artists and their works that are overlapping or differing with this thougt are researched. How and how much “ugliness” is contained in “plastic arts” and what does it mean for our daily life questions are asked and commented.
