The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that affect the quality of the
relationship between adolescent and their parents. In this context, the effects of
spousal support, peer relationship, sibling relationship and parental self-efficacy on
adolescent-parent relationship were examined. In addition, to measure the quality of
adolescent-parent relationship the Adolescent-Parent Relationships Scale (APRS)
and to measure the quality of sibling relationship quality the Sibling Relationship
Scale (SRS) were developed. Factors affecting adolescent-parent relationship were
determined with data from 782 high school students and their parents. The second
study group consisted three different groups included 458, 249 and 217 high school
students, reached within the scope of the development of the scales. In this study to
purpose of collecting data, APRS, Spouse Support Scale, Peer Relationship Scale,
SRS and Parental Efficacy Scale have been used. In this study, SPSS 21, LISREL
8.8 and AMOS 21 package programs have been used for processing and analyzing
the data. In order to analysis of the data, explanatory and confirmatory factor
analyses, structural equation model and descriptive statistics were used.
The results of the analysis show that the APRS developed to measure the quality of
relationship between adolescents and their parents and the SRS developed to
measure the quality of relationship between adolescents and their siblings were
valid and reliable scales. The validity of APRS and SRS were tested via explanatory
and confirmatory factor analyses and the reliability were tested via Cronbach Alpha
and split half method. Also in this study, structural equation model was used to
determine the factors affecting adolescent-parent relationship. In addition, in order
to determine the significance of the partial mediation effect of sibling relationships
was bootstrapping procedure. The result of the adolescent-parent model test show
that, spousal support, peer relationship and sibling relationship has positive effect
on adolescent-parent relationship significantly and directly. On the other hand,
parental self-efficacy have negative effect on adolescent-parent relationship
significantly. In addition, parental self-efficacy effect adolescent-parent relationship
xi
with the mediating role of sibling relationship. The results were discussed in
accordance with relevant literature and made suggestions to researchers,
counselors, policy-makers and parents.
