Negation is a subject that is addressed at syntactic and semantic levels, based on different linguistic categories in linguistics. In this study, the concept of negativity is given and a theoretical framework has been drawn, and the general negation typology has been derived by exemplifying the issues in the negation literature with the comparative language data. With this typology, the forms of negation in Turkish were determined and the related material obtained was interpreted. For Turkish, the "sentential negation" sample was chosen and the negative items that constitute the sentantial negation were identified. The interactions of these items with each other were examined by giving their aspect at the morpho-syntactic and semantic-pragmatic levels.
The thesis consists of three main chapters: 1. Chapter "Negation and Basic Concepts", which gives the theoretical background, Chapter 2 "Issues in the Study of Negation", which includes studies and examples in the literature of negation, and Chapter 3 "Negation in Turkish", in which Turkish material is analyzed. Sentential negation in Turkish has been examined with the examples selected from the literature-corpus sources with a function-oriented approach, giving its distinctive features.
