ABSTRACT
German composer Paul Hindemith, one of the leading composers of 20th century music, began his musical career by playing the violin and took this career to the extreme with his composition and viola interpretation. The master musician, who attracted attention with his outstanding talent since his childhood, ranks among the unforgotten composers of this time with his successful works in the fields of soloist, orchestra conductor, chamber music and academic studies. Paul Hindemith composed works for many instruments and left a great legacy to the next generation of viola artists with the works he introduced into the viola repertoire. At the same time, he gave the first performance of most of his works for viola.
In 1919, he wrote Op.11 No.4 Viola Piano Sonata, which was among his first works and his first viola work. The composer's preference for playing the viola during these years led him to search for new repertoire. In this work he opted for the variation technique, using tonal and atonal harmonies together.
In this study, Paul Hindemith's life and selected viola works have been briefly explained and Op.11 No.4 Viola Piano Sonata is examined in detail for form, style and viola technique
