Abstract
The Big Turkish Dictionary, by the Turkish Language Association (Türk Dil Kurumu, 2013), defines the word painting as forms, made with equipment such as pencils and brushes, on paper, canvas, etc., of the appearances in nature of beings . When the words, being , appearance and form in the description are analyzed further using the same dictionary, the statement changes as follows: the shadows, made with equipment such as pencils and brushes, on paper, canvas, etc., of the shadows in nature of reality . Thus, the meaning of painting becomes the shadows of the shadows of reality . The idea, which accepts the objects of perception as the shadows of reality , is in keeping with Plato s theory of forms . In the allegory of the cave (Platon, 2013, p. 231 – 235), which Plato uses to elucidate his core concept, prisoners, held captive, chained, in a cave, can only see shadows that fall on the wall in front of them and accept the shadows as real objects.
