Cardiovascular diseases are some of the leading causes of death all over the world, and the prevalence is expected to increase further during the next years. For early detection of atherosclerotic unstable plaques will be a great value in order to reduce the morbidity mortality level in affected patients. With the developing technology nanomaterials aimed to develop to be used in the early diagnosis of atherosclerosis. In recent studies, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an important role in the anatomical and functional investigation of large vessels. Instead of conventional MRI contrast agents, non-toxic and biocompatible iron oxide nanoparticles have been started to use in the clinic. However, the uptake of these agents are nonspecific, so the labeling efficiency for plaques in vivo is not ideal. Iron oxide nanoparticles are modified with biocompatible polymeric materials such as dextran, chitosan, etc., and used in vivo applications.
