Patellofemoral Ağrı Sendromunda Hareketle Mobilizasyon ve Bantlamanın Ağrı, Fonksiyon ve Denge Üzerine Kısa Dönem Etkilerinin Karşılaştırılması
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the short time effects of mobilization with movement (MWM) and taping on pain, function and balance in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFAS). 35 female patients diagnosed with unilateral PFAS included in this study. Patients were randomized into two groups and for the first group (n=18, 37.5±7.8 years) we applied two different approaches (straight leg raise with traction, tibial gliding) of Mulligan Mobilisation with Movement (MWM) and exercise therapy, for the second group (n=17, 36.7±7.8 years) we applied Kinesio taping with exercise therapy. Both groups received 2 weeks (2 sessions per week) of therapy. Together with 4 session of therapy, the patients were followed also with a 6 week exercise program. Assessments were done respectively; before therapy, 45 minutes after the first session, at the end of 2 weeks therapy and finally at the end of 6 weeks. Demographic information of data was recorded. All patients were evaluated for pain (Visual Analog Scale), Hamstring muscle flexibility, Knee flexion range of motion and for the functional assessments; 10 mt walking, 10 steps up-down, timed up and go, Y balance test, and Kujala patellofemoral scoring system. As a result of both methods, we observed a statistically significant improvement for all parameters evaluated (p<0.05). However, mobilization with movement technique was seen to be more effective in decreasing resting pain and increasing hamstring flexibility than Kinesio taping for instantaneous and short term assessments (p<0.05). In conclusion, we indicate that, in PFAS patients, both therapy techniques had similar effects on pain, function and balance, but for decreasing resting pain and increasing hamstring flexibility, the mobilization with movement technique was seen to be more effective.
