Erken Matematiksel Akıl Yürütme Becerileri Değerlendirme Aracı Geliştirilmesi
Abstract
This study aimed to develop “Evaluation Instrument for the Early Mathematical
Reasoning Skills” in order to determine the mathematical reasoning skills of children
in the area of measurement and data analysis-probability as well as to perform its
validity and reliability. Furthermore, variables such as the effect of child gender, age,
institution attended and part/full time attendance to the institution, total duration of
preschool attendance as well as age and educational background of their parents were
analyzed. The study group is composed of randomly selected 204 children of normal
development in Ankara at the age of 60-74 months attending dependent and
independent kindergarten, private preschools, daycare centers and kindergartens of
Ministry of National Education. Data were collected using “Evaluation Instrument
for the Early Mathematical Reasoning Skills” that is type of holistic rubric and
“Child Information Form” that was developed by the researcher. The instrument
developed was found to be reliable and valid. No significant difference was found
between the scores of reasoning areas and types of boys and girls. In addition, there
was no significant difference between the scores of age of parents and total duration
of preschool attendance for the reasoning areas and types. Older children gained
higher scores from the instrument than attendees of preschool and those attended
institutions part-time for the measurement and induction areas. It is observed that
children of university graduate fathers got higher scores as for the measurement and
induction areas; while, those of university graduate mothers had higher scores from
the data analysis-probability and induction areas. Moreover, no difference was found
among the variables for the deduction reasoning scores.
