ABSTRACT
Arslanhan, Ş., Determining the Attitudes of Midwives and Nurses Working in a
Women’s Health Research and Education Hospital Towards Evidence-Based
Practices and Their Barriers to Using Research Results, Hacettepe University
Graduate School of Health Sciences Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing
Program, Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2019. This study was conducted as a
descriptive study to determine the attitudes of nurses and midwives working in a
women's health research and education hospital towards evidence-based practices
and their barriers to using the research results. The study was conducted between 02
January and 30 June 2018 with 253 nurses and midwives who worked at Dr. Zekai
Tahir Burak Women’s Health Research and Education Hospital and agreed to
participate in the study. In the data collection, “Descriptive Information Form”, “The
Barriers to Research Utilization Scale (BRUS)” and “Evidence-Based Nursing
Attitude Scale (EBNAS)” were used. All data collection tools were filled by nurses
and midwives. Number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, median, first and third
quarters, Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation analysis were used in the
analysis of the data. According to the results of the research; the first three obstacles
to using the research results of midwives and nurses are as follows; "there is not
enough time to read the research in the workplace"(96.5%), "there is not enough time
to apply new ideas in the workplace" (89.7%) and "there is not enough opportunity
for nursing practices" (87.7%).The mean BRUS score of nurses and midwives was
1.98 ± 0.71; the mean EBNAS score was 50.26 ± 7.75. It was determined that there
was a moderate positive correlation between the total scores of BRUS and EBNAS
(ρ = 0.523, p <0.001).According to the results of the research; in order to increase the
use of evidence-based practices, it is recommended that institution managers enable
nurses and midwives to participate in scientific activities for the development of
research knowledge and skills, encourage nurses and midwives to conduct research
and use their results, and provide more support and time for their participation in
scientific activities.
