Abstract

Role of local media reporting on xenophobic conflicts in South Africa: An examination of print media coverage of the conflict in SOWETO from 19 January 2015 to 5 February 2015, Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2018. The research seeks to establish the role of local media reporting on xenophobic conflicts in South Africa. This is done through analysis of media content from two print media outlets – The Daily Sun and The Sowetan which are the most popular papers within the Country and also accessible in SOWETO where the research was conducted. In the advent of modern technology, media plays a major role in our daily lives, connecting the world and sharing the stories that contribute to the political, social and economic development of societies. In South Africa, print and broadcast media play a vital role in sharing and communicating stories about foreigners and migrants. More so because they also provide a platform for the public to comment on issues relating to foreigners through letters to the editor and talk shows on broadcast media. The research will make use of qualitative tools and interviews will be conducted with 8 South African citizens if possible, 1 representative from each of the media outlets monitored if possible and 2 other journalists, 4 Civil Society Organisations representatives and 2 experts from the Peace and Conflict studies field.
