In this study; carbonate rock masses along the southern boundary of Acıgöl, a wetland with high salinity in Afyon and Denizli province, were investigated hydrogeologically.
Within the scope of the study, the literature review was carried out on the use of groundwater dependent ecosystems, the use of isotope techniques in hydrology and hydrogeology, as well as the use in the wetlands and karstic aquifers. Precipitation and temperature information were obtained from the nearby meteorological stations and these data were used in the rainy and dry period analysis and for the purpose of making the water budget of the Acıgöl basin. Following the literature study, a field study was planned and a series of sampling and on-site measurements were made in the field within the framework of the determined objectives.
As a result of the evaluations, it was determined that 37 million m3 of precipitation fell on the mesozoic limestones that exposed in 76.12 km2 area extending along the southwest-northeast border in the basin. Approximately 72% of this rainfall passes away from the system by evaporation, while half of the remaining amount passes through as surface flow and the other half reaches the groundwater by infiltration.
The results of the stable environmental isotope analysis carried out in the samples taken from the study area are located on a meteoric water line whose equation is δ2H = 8δ18O + 14. The high value of deuterium excess indicates that the sampled water originates from the precipitation of atmospheric water vapor with a moisture content below the global averages.
