Beethoven'ın Orta Dönem Piyano Sonatlarında Gelişme Bölümlerinin Tematik Analizi

Abstract

AYDIN, Zeynep. Thematic Analysis of Development Sections in Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Middle Period Piano Sonatas, M.Sc. Thesis, Ankara, 2018. This study is an analytical examination of the thematic structure of Development sections of first movements of Ludwig van Beethoven’s middle period piano sonatas. In the Introduction, classification of Beethoven’s piano sonatas are discussed. In the second chapter, the methodology of the study is submitted. And the Analysis chapter consists of a comprehensive analysis in three main dimensions; “determination of the formal structure and general characteristics such as length and mode for each movement”, “discovering origins of materials used in the Development sections regarding their relationships with the formal elements in the Exposition”, “determining these materials’ amount of use in Development sections”. It is concluded that; movements can be grouped as “Short”, “Medium” and “Long” regarding their length; 9 different kind of materials are used in the Development sections; the most frequently used material is “Theme 1”; in the beginning and at the end of Development sections mostly “Theme 1” is used; in minor movements, less “Theme 1” material and more “Bridge” material is used and use of “New material” appears; variety of materials used increases in proportion with the lenght of sections.
