Kosova'da Bulunan Geç Dönem Osmanlı Duvar Resimleri Ve Boyalı Nakışlar

Subsequent to its emergence as a new art form in and around the imperial palace in Istanbul, the mural extended to the late Ottoman Anatolia and Balkans. This thesis deals with such Ottoman murals and decoration executed in Kosovo. During the research, 18 buildings with murals were located; 7 of which did not continue in their original states or disappeared completely. While the Kosovo War of 1998-1999 was the foremost reason of destruction or damage, post-war restorations proved to be inadequate and wrong. In this thesis, each mural is evaluated individually, and discussed within the regional context. The themes, artistic problems, and iconographic analyses of the wall paintings and decoration as well as their place in the center-periphery relationship are scrutinized. Furthermore, conclusions are drawn with regard to visual sources that the artists made use of. Another topic investigated in this study is the destruction brought about by war and the repercussions of wrong mural restorations. Accordingly, old photographs and archival documents were investigated leading to an attempt to construct an idea about the past and present of the wall paintings and decoration.
