The game is an important phenomenon that has begun with the existence of people and
has continued its development as much as day-to-day. The game has an important place
in terms of child development from the first period when the person is alive to the
adolescence period. In the researches related to this process, it has been observed that
the play has an active and functional role in the child's physical, psycho-motor,
language, emotional and mental development and social development. The game is a
wealth of culture that plays a role in bringing the non-concrete cultural heritage of the
nation in which it is built into the future. Today, children's games have begun to change
shape, affected by technological changes and developments.
The main aim of this study is to reveal the traditional children's games that are effective
in the development and socialization of the child, to draw attention to the games played,
to be transmitted to future generations, and to contribute to the local culture of the
selected region. For this purpose, the Afyonkarahisar province, which should be
evaluated in terms of rich folk culture in the Aegean region, has been selected and the
children's games belonging to the centers and districts which have not been investigated
before, have been tried to be taken under registration. A total of 335 games were
compiled by interviewing 316 people. Some of the information about compiled games
has been also examined in written sources and some information has been used as
footnotes for reminding. Functional Folklore and Performance Theory in contextcentered
theories of theology have been utilized in the study.
In the introduction to the study, information about the subject, scope, purpose, method,
model, limitations of the research has been given. In the first part, Afyonkarahisar's
historical, geographical, economic structure, customs, handicrafts, architecture are
introduced. In the second part, the concept of game is explained, the features of childplay
relation and children's games are emphasized, studies on children's games and
classifications of children's games are examined and Afyonkarahisar Children's Games
Classification Experiment is done. In the third chapter, Afyonkarahisar children's games

compiled with interviewing and observation-based methods have been examined from a
structural point of view. In the fourth chapter, Afyonkarahisar children's games are
given in alphabetical order in the texts of the children. When the games are transferred,
information about player characteristics, game time, game material, game rules, game
play format are given. While the games are explained, the words of the local mouth are
explained and graphic drawings of some games are made.
If the games are changed day by day, the variations in the game are transferred together.
In the fifth chapter, the functions of Afyonkarahisar children's games, child-playeducation
relation, effects on the development of the children, auditory messages and
values in children's games are examined. The cultural functions of children's games and
the functions of children's games in terms of some branches of science are emphasized.
In the conclusion section, it is tried to evaluate the meaning and importance of the
cognitive games which are a part of the culture in the finder light, the contribution of the
children to the developmental stages, the educational functions and the determined
characteristics of the games. It has been determined that the structural elements of
Afyonkarahisar children's games interact with each other and many games are forgotten
due to change and technological developments. Suggestions have been made for the
preservation of traditional children's games, one of the common cultural values. After
the conclusion and suggestions section, information about the source persons,
bibliographic sections are given. In the appendix, the photographs of the children's
games of Afyonkarahisar that were obtained by the researcher have been used and the
questions and forms used during the interview have been given.
