An alternative approach to traditional methods such as incineration and pyrolysis for the recycling of waste tires has been developed. A novel recycling method utilizing cross-metathesis reactions and Grubbs-type catalysts has been introduced. The study focuses on reacting the primary component of tires, 1,4-cis-poly(isoprene) polymer, with cross-linking agents such as methyl acrylate, methyl-10-undecenoate, and dimethyl fumarate to produce ester-terminated functional oligomers within the molecular weight range of 350-700 Da.
Reaction conditions were first optimized using a model system based on 1,4-cis-poly(isoprene) and subsequently applied to real waste tire samples, including granulated orbit-NR and automotive tires. Experiments achieved up to 42% soluble fraction by mass, and the resulting products were thoroughly characterized using SEC and ^1H-NMR techniques. Additionally, cost analyses of the process were conducted, demonstrating that this cross-metathesis-based method provides an environmentally friendly and economically viable recycling strategy.
