With globalization, the understanding of consumption has gone beyond the meaning of meeting needs and
has given rise to excessive consumption and the phenomenon of waste, leading to the consumption of
human and natural resources and causing some problems both individually and socially in social and
economic terms. Thus, the types of waste, especially food, clothing, digital, energy, and water, have
diversified and increased today. Waste has become an important future problem for both rural and urban
spaces. In this context, to understand and compare the situation of wastage in rural and urban spaces; the
research has made it its subjecttoin vestigate how “food, energy and water, clothing, digital (e-waste)”
waste types are made sense of and how they are realized in the two spaces. In addition, to prevent waste, it
was tried to understand how individuals in rural and urban areas perform saving and accumulation
behaviors, what individuals think about recycling, and what behaviors and activities they engage in. The
research was carried out in urban and rural areas determined as Cankaya district in Ankara, Emreler Village
of Seydiler district in Kastamonu and Terzi and Hatip Villages of Demirciozu Neighborhood. While the
preference of the Cankaya district of Ankara as the urban area was affected by the fact that it is a
metropolitan city, has a large population, and where urban relations are more intense, the selection of Terzi
Village, Hatip Village and Emreler Village was effective because it is a place where agricultural and animal
husbandry activities are carried out and rural relations are observed intensively. In this context, in the study
where phenomenological research design based on interpretative paradigm and qualitative research method
was used, in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 participants in the city and 14 participants in the
rural area, in addition to participatory observations, a total of 30 people were made. As a result of the
research, results were reached to understand the perspectives of individuals towards waste and its types,
their practices, and the measures they took regarding savings, accumulation and recycling activities
depending on the unique characteristics of urban and rural areas.
