BEDİR BAŞER, Selvi, Valenz in Turkmen: Morphological Processes, Master’s Thesis,
Ankara, 2024
In Turkish grammatical studies, the notion of valenz has been analysed in terms of “verb complement relation” or “predicate-case suffix” relation. This thesis aims to present the
morphological processes affecting the valenz in Turkmen and a limited comparative
analysis of the valenz with Turkish.
In the thesis, morphological processes are constructed as the processes that increase the
valenz and the processes that decrease the valenz. The processes that increase the valenz
are handled under two subheadings as causativization and object addition. The processes
that decrease the valenz are analysed under five subheadings: passivisation,
anticausativization, reflexivisation, reciprocal, accusative, noun and object
incorporation. The processes affecting the valenz of the verbs are discussed on the
propositions scanned from various types of Turkmen works.
The purpose of the thesis; Instead of the limited perspective of a comprehensive issue such as
valenz, it is to make an examination through various categories that affect the request and operate
the process. In addition, since Turkmen and Turkish are in the same language family, it is
to show off their similarities as well as their differences.
