This thesis focuses on how Mehmed Ali Pasha emerged as a threat to both the Ottoman Empire and European alignment over time, starting from his appointment as the Governor of Egypt in 1805. In this context, the thesis aims to shed light on Mehmed Ali Pasha's consolidation of power in Egypt, the motivations behind his reforms and social transformations, and the reasons why the Egyptian Question evolved into a long-lasting crisis. Furthermore, it seeks to evaluate the military and diplomatic developments in the context of European alignment.
Accordingly, the first part of the thesis concentrates on Mehmed Ali Pasha's appointment as the Governor of Egypt and the administration he established there. The second part of the thesis attempts to explain the underlying reasons why the Egyptian Question became an international issue, as well as the political and military developments that ensued. The third and final part of the thesis explores the military and diplomatic interventions undertaken to resolve the crisis, with a particular focus on the status of the Straits and the new order established in the region.
