Balayev T. Investigation of Prognostic Factors on Prognosis and Survival in
Patients Undergoing Surgery for Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma: A
Retrospective Analysis" University of Hacettepe School of Medicine, Thesis in
Urology, Ankara 2023.
Between 1987 and 2023, data from 210 patients who underwent surgery due
to upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) without metastasis at the time of
diagnosis and a history of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) were
retrospectively analyzed. Factors influencing bladder recurrence and survival were
investigated. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 software. The median followup period was 24 (1-324) months, and the mean age at surgery was 62,5 ± 11 years.
Of the patients, 91 (43.3%) were <62.5 years old, and 119 (56.7%) were >62.5 years
old, with a female-to-male ratio of 44/166. Bladder tumor history, high tumor grade,
and positive surgical margin (PSM) were found to be independent risk factors for
cancer-specific survival (p=0.034, p=0.019, p<0.001; respectively). High T stage and
grade, PSM were significant risk factors for cancer-specific survival. Advanced
hydronephrosis, age, and surgical margin status were identified as factors affecting
overall survival (respectively, p=0.048, p=0.003, p=0.003, p<0.001). Patients with
tumor at the surgical margin, a history of MIBC, or high-grade tumor should be
closely monitored for postoperative bladder recurrences.
