Language is a formation that survives with people, can change, develop or decrease with them.
In this process, some rare cases are observed. Some rare cases are observed in this nonstationary
formation. This unusual situation occurs when a word is about to disappear, and the word
continues to exist in the language with a usage called fossil. In other words, fossil words, once
used but now unknown and unused for various reasons, some of them are old dictionary units that
can survive because they are in word groups. In this study, fossil noun and verb bases were
determined in the derived nouns in the Turkish Dictionary (TDK, 2011) and Kamus-ı Türkî (TDK,
2019). The fossil noun and verb bases in derived nouns determined by scanning the Turkish
Dictionary and Kamus-ı Türkî, and their fossilization rates were calculated with the content
scanning made in the Turkish National Corpus and by inspecting the historical periods of Turkish,
the etymology of the words is given. In addition, the use of words in contemporary Turkish
dialects is also mentioned. As a result, fossilized noun and verb bases were determined in 31
Turkish-derived words.
