This study aimed to examine the relationship between gamification features and intrinsic motivation from the perspective of Self Determination Theory (SDT). SDT states that feelings of autonomy, competence and relatedness should be supported to facilitate intrinsic motivation. In this regard, the study was conducted in a gamified course in which avatars, virtual goods, bonus tasks and options were used to fulfill autonomy need; points, badges and leaderboards were used to fulfill competence need; teams, comments and suggestions were used to fulfill relatedness need. The study, which had a correlational research design, was carried out with 37 volunteer participants. Data was collected through Need Satisfaction by Gamification Features Scale that was developed in this study with a total of 209 participants and Intrinsic Motivation Inventory. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and Pearson correlation statistics. According to the findings, of the gamification features used in the course, the gamification feature that satisfied autonomy need the most was providing options, that satisfied competence need the most was points and that satisfied relatedness need the most was commenting on the work of others. Gamification implementation satisfied autonomy need the most and competence need the least. There was a moderate, positive and significant relationship between intrinsic motivation and autonomy, competence, relatedness and overall need satisfaction by gamification features, separately. Finally, the needs most related to intrinsic motivation were autonomy, relatedness and competence, respectively. Research findings support that SDT is a theoretical foundation that could explain how gamification motivates.
