Social cohesion is the process in which communities have a desire to live together and form a unity in diversity through mutual interaction. The purpose of this study is to understand social cohesion and intergroup relations between Syrians and the local community.
This cross-sectional study is a descriptive qualitative study of phenomenological type. Quota sampling method was used to determine the research sample. In this context, three categories have been identified: population groups (local community, Syrians and institution employees), cities (Hatay, Ankara and Izmir) and gender (women and men). Within the scope of the research, in-depth interviews were held with a total of 45 participants. MAXQDA package program was used to analyze the research data.
Research data are clustered under three main themes, two sub-themes and 24 categories. The main themes are; 'migration process', 'social cohesion' and 'intergroup relations'. The main theme of 'social cohesion' is divided into two sub-themes as 'elements that complicate social cohesion' and 'elements that facilitate social cohesion'.
As a result, it is seen that inequalities in the welfare system, ideologies such as nationalism and patriarchy, the crisis of confidence, the language barrier, the media and political discourse, stereotypes and prejudices, discrimination, social exclusion and violations of rights against the internal and external groups complicate social cohesion. On the other hand, it is understood that philanthropy and rights-based approaches, inclusion processes, intergroup contact, social networks, institutions and institution employees that provide services in the field of social cohesion, the empowerment potential of women facilitate social cohesion. It is observed that intergroup relations are mostly realized in order to meet minimum requirements and in general close relations in terms of friendship or neighborhood cannot be established. On the other hand, it is seen that the relationships among children are much more positive than the relationships among adults.
