“Bekâr Odaları”nda Kalan Erkeklerin Deneyimlerinin Eleştirel Sosyal Hizmet Bakış Açısıyla Değerlendirilmesi: İzmir- Basmane Örneği
Özet
The primary goal of this research is to evaluate the experiences of men staying in bachelor rooms in the context of urban marginality and hegemonic masculinity from an exploratory perspective and to argue the possible interventions oriented for those problems in the context of critical social work paradigm.
A qualitative research design, which is the most appropriate method for studying the problem and the field of the research, is utilized. Experts and resource persons are reached during the pilot study conducted between 10.06.2017 and 12.06.2017 in Basmane district of İzmir. Participant observation and snowball sampling technique is preferred in the field research conducted between 12.08.2017-10.09.2017. In this process, in-depth interviews are conducted with 28 men staying in bachelor rooms. MAXQDA 2018 qualitative analysis program is utilized in the analysis and interpretation of the findings with the phenomenological analysis technique.
In the context of the results of the research, it is possible to define bachelor rooms as an alternative sheltering strategy which is accompanied by informal working relations and experiential and traumatic crises. An acute need for shelter may emerge as a result of crisis within family, economic losses and health problems all of which have a negative impact on social functionality. Inadequacy of institutional services makes bachelor rooms, socially and historically significant. When it comes to discussing within the context of urban relations, the exploration of the ruined regions, where the bachelor rooms are located, is crucial by reason of those fields’ housing different needs from service models foreseen by formal social work.
As a result of the need for this discovery, the starting process of staying in the bachelor rooms, reasons for staying in these rooms, and daily practices of men are discussed. It is also discussed how men staying in the bachelor room interpret this process, their expectations for the future and their solutions for the problems they experience.
Within the framework of the data obtained from the research, it is understood the importance of developing institutional services for the psychosocial needs of men staying in bachelor rooms. In addition, it is necessary to develop a critical perspective on the awareness of gender and their preventive impact in the provision of services. It is also important to develop alternative solutions where institutional services are insufficient and develop skills and values in academic education.
