Abstract
This descriptive
study has been carried out in order to determine the features of accidents/ıncidents at
sea and medical evacuations coordinated by the Main Search and Rescue
Coordination Center from 2001 to 2012. All the reports of accidents and medical
evacuations prepared by the Main Search - Rescue Coordination Center between
01.01.2001 and 31.12.2012 are included in the study. In the study, a total of 1796
reports were examined. In the reports examined within the context of the study, the
year 2010 ranks first with 12,7% (228 accidents/incidents/evacuations) in terms of
the number of cases according to years; autum ranks first with 27,7% (497
accidents/incidents/medical evacuations) in terms of the number of cases according
to seasons; the hours between 12:00 and 05:59 p.m. ranks first with 30,0% (538
accidents/incidents/medical evacuations) in terms of the number of cases according
to the hour of occurences; the city of Istanbul ranks first with 44,3% (795
accidents/incidents/medical evacuations) in terms of the number of cases according
to the location of cases. The Coastal Command has intervened in 58,7% of the events
(1054 accidents/incidents/medical evacuations). In the reports examined within the
context of the study, the overall number of the injured is 150, the overall death toll is
311, the number of the rescued is 6042, the number of the lost is 202 and the number
of patients is 73. According to the reports examined in the study, the number of
people who are affected by accidents/incidents at sea and medical evacuations is
6778. 70,6% of the patients/injured were taken to the state hospitals (n=48 hospitals).
