Ankara Il Merkezinde Jinekolojik Onkoloji Ünitelerinde Çalışan Ebe ve Hemşirelerin Palyatif Bakım Konusunda Uygulamalarının Belirlenmesi

This descriptive study was made to determine the palliative care practices of the midwives and nurses working in the gynecological oncology units in the Centrum of Ankara, and involved a number of hospitals with gynecological oncology units within the boundaries of the Province of Ankara. The universe comprised of 65 midwives and nurses taking care of the gynecological cancer patients in the six hospitals that formed the universe for this study (n=72). A questionnaire developed by the researcher was used to collect data. The questionnaire was completed by the researcher by means of direct interviews from June 30, 2012 to September 30, 2012. The research data were analyzed through the package software SPSS 19.0, and the descriptive statistics (number, percentage, average, standard deviation) were evaluated. It was determined that 47% of the participant midwives and nurses got knowledge on the palliative care, mostly through the on-job training (71%). It is understood that the midwives and nurses more frequently saw, and took properly reported actions against such symptoms as ?pain? (100%), ?nausea-vomiting? (92.5%) and ?fatigue? (86.2%) in the gynecological cancer patients. The midwives and nurses were understood to pay attention to the ethical rules in the end of life care practices for palliative care, and to the nursing intervention on information of the patients and their relatives on the disease and its progress partially by 43.1%, while no interviews took place on death with the patients and their family by 73.8%. The midwives and nurses mostly confirmed the option that the handicap ?patient has opioid phobia? in the palliative care practices (66.2%). In line with the results obtained through this study, it was suggested to enhance the awareness of midwives and nurses on the palliative care, include the palliative care in the graduate curriculum and on-job training programs, organize a number of courses in this field, and develop a number of guidelines for symptomatic checks in palliative care.
