Traditional Turkish music education and teaching has been transferred through the “meşk” (traditional teaching) system, today continues in this way due to its systematic structure. In tradition, performance of music with lyrics, along with the “meşk” system has been more easily learned and performed by virtue of its music journals and procedural patterns compared to the performance of instrumental music. Learning and transferring of the instrumental music, on the other hand, has been developed with the element of memory according to the tradition of “meşk”.
Beginning from the 20th century, with the western notation being included in our music, instrumental performances became more and more popular and the works that bring technical difficulties into forefront were composed. All of these paved the way for individualization in instrumental performers. Thus, the concept used as virtuosity in Western music has emerged as a master performer in our music.
Western musicians must have completed a certain method training and meet various criteria in order to have the virtuoso definition. The difference of traditional Turkish instrumental music performance from Western music at this point, what the prerequisites of having the definition of master performer are, and what the performers should do in order to have this definition will be presented in line with the opinions of twenty five experts who are called master performers in their field.
