Abstract
HIV AIDS is a chronic infectious disease with multi-systemic effects which patients must learn how to live with it. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the charecteristics of HIV AIDS patients, clinical features and disease complications. The records of 255 HIV-infected patients who were admitted to our clinic between January 1986 and March 2013 were included in this study. Most of the patients were male (% 75.6) and Turkish citizens (84.7% ). Mean age was 38 (range, 19-80). Nearly one fourth of the patients (27.5% ) were university graduates. For the whole study group, the most frequent route of transmission was through heterosexual intercourse (63.1% ). One third (30.7% ) of cases were diagnosed when screened due to AIDS-related clinical symptoms. Mean CD4+ lymphocyte count on first admission was 240 cells mm3 for those admitted before the year 2006 and 375 cells mm3 for those admitted after 2006 (p 0.005).
