Portrait as a Picture’s type; has made great progress on reflecting a person’s character and features. First of all, this study will try to explain about portrait by analyzing its content, dimensioning and technical maintenance such as light and shadow effect. This writing also consists the importance of portrait and the events that are little known by the majority around it. The art of portrait, which started to develop during 14th Century Renaissance, is continuely spreading even today. The characteristics and stories of the person who took the picture are observed and examined in depth. Although the artist's freedom to create is partly compelling in portraying the person's personal characteristics, portrait has an important place among the indispensable subjects by the vast majority of artists.
Portraits have been the best witnesses of art history. While the artists created their own portraits or faces of others, at the same time they also reflectlng the characteristics of the period.
The second chapter of the writing mentions example of Russian portrait artists. The works of Russian portrayer such as Kramskoy, Repin and Serov were studied and their stories were analyzed. Applicative studies of the subject also conducted by looking at important portrait paintings in the Turkish art. The next chapter will try to explain about portraits that have caused a lot of debates among the audiences. By conducting series if studies, the aim of this study is to contribute on defining portrait as an important type of painting.
