Turkish Sufi Literature is a branch of literature shaped by society’s beliefs, prayers, and the worldviews within this context. Works written in this field advise readers love of God, the prophet’s guidance, beliefs on after-life, inner peace through prayers, perfection of creation, ways to reach truth, and virtue. With the acceptance of Islam by Turks, first works were produced in this literary field. In order to convey thoughts to readers easily, a clear, plain, and understandable language is used. Humor is a field that scientists find mysterious and interesting throughout history. It is a reaction that is though-provoking and laughter-inducing to a situation, incident, word or behavior. Questions such as how laughter, the physiological indication of humor, occurs, or what prevents laughter led to the emergence of humor theories. One of these theories, theory of incongruity, frames this study on evaluating the components of humor in shathiye poetry.
The purpose of this study is to provide a new perspective, a modern approach to shathiye, one of the fundamental topics of Turkish Sufi Literature. Within this scope, shathiyes most known and that have strong humor components by poets from different periods and geographies are collected through a sampling method. It was determined that shathiye can be evaluated within the frame of incongruency theory, one of humor theories.
