ALİYEVA, Tunzala. Molla Mahmud Zu`i`s Divan (Transcription Text-Analyzing-Concordance-Functional Dictionary), Doctoral Dissertation, Ankara, 2019.
Our dissertation is composed of an Introduction and four parts, followed by a Conclusion and a Bibliography. In the Introduction, you will find information on Azerbaijan’s political, social and literary position in the 19th century, where Zu’i lived.
The first part includes Mollah Mahmud Zu’i’s life, literary character, people and works, which influenced him. At the beginning, you will find the distinctions regarding Zu’i’s name and evidence on birth and death dates, occupations and family life. Poets he recited in different parts of Divan, names he liked openly and through translation are among those who he was influenced by. This part also includes two of his other works as long as Divan.
In the second part, Divan is examined based on its style and content as long as its relations between texts. In style, you will find separate information on verse styles and an examination of poetry euphony, language and genre. The content includes facts about love, people, tribes, cities, nature, social life, religion and Islamic philosophy. Relations between texts gives examples of Citation, Allusion, Reference, Reference + Collage + Translation, Citation + Rewriting, Reference + Allusion + Citation.
The third part is on Zu’i Divan. This part includes an introduction of Divan’s copy, the method used in text preparation, transcription signs and a transcribed version of the text. The translation of the Persian part can be found as a footnote at the bottom of the verse.
The fourth part includes, Divan’s concordance and functional dictionary. You will find words/statements from Divan in an alphabetic order as long as the meaning of each word and the bibliography of verses, within parentheses. The words are shown divided into affixes and stem next to the bibliography within square brackets.
A functional dictionary was prepared based on a concordance; the meanings of the words used in Divan. In this way, a vocabulary of Zu’i Divan was created. Information and evidence found during the examination are presented in the Conclusion. This is followed by a Bibliography.
Mollah Zu’i’s Divan has not been examined, transcribed in whole until today. Divan is important for its reflection on Azerbaijan’s literary position in the 19th century. Russian words along with Turkish, Arabic and Persian words can be found within the text. There is a duality within the text due to the dialect and its literary language. The work remains true to the original in order to reflect abovementioned characteristics.
