Özet
Urbanization as well as the industrialization are mostly shaped by economic reasons. Apart from economic parameters, the concepts such as sense of security, belonging and property are also effective in the formation of the city. This research aims to examine the foundation of the first cities, the emergence of different urban building materials during the following technological process and the relative social change occurred until today.
The first part of the research tackles the sense of belonging and its spatial aspect within the context of different psychoanalytical motivation theories. Then, the examples of individuals building their own house and space and the individuals who had to settle in the ready built ones are compared. The artistic practice of the research is based on the concepts developed by thinkers such as Leibniz, Spinoza and Simmel.
The second part, on the other hand, reviews the works of art produced on the basis of city and the concept of belonging. It is believed that artistic practice may help individuals to overcome the negative effects of the metropolis and face the reality of the urban sphere. Particularly, the increasing population and alienated individual are becoming social problems. Endless industrial and environmental change in city is also represented in the mutual reactional productions of the artists and thinkers from different areas.
This theoretical study and the practices conducted for the purposes of the research aim to make the effects of the repressive change on the city visible and reflect upon and produce within the context of materials and images used in the city. As a result of these practices, it is aimed to transform the dynamics of the ruling power by using them in different perspectives and to add new meanings to these images. The goal here is to break down the prejudices regarding art and daily life and encourage people to rethink, and to develop individual images against the images of the society of the spectacle.
