In the comic book, book and film scripts, female characters were criticized for writing in a feminist manner in accordance with the taste of the male viewer. In comics, female characters have always been at the forefront with their sex paraphernalia. Supporting women to be seen as sexual objects should be prevented, the characters should be treated equally regardless of gender and in this context female characters should be depicted with a more realistic understanding and technique.
In this context, the first part of the research titled “Comparative Analysis of the objectification of women's characters in comic books and the application of a comic book”, the definition of women has been made from the old ages to the present and the image of women has been focused on. The definition of feminism and its types are mentioned. The concept of gender, sexism and gender roles are discussed. The role of women in American and Far East societies were studied. Feminist artists and designers; followed by feminist comic book writers and artists were introduced.
In the second part, the definition of comic book art has been made and its development in the world has been discussed. In the study divided into two as the West and the Far East, the Western comic book: America, Europe and Turkey has been examined. Historical development in China, Korea and Japan, respectively, is discussed while examining the Far East comic book history. America and Japan are important countries in this area where comic book culture and industry occupy a large part, so these two countries have been studied in more detail. The study of the international known Japanese comic book (manga) was not limited to history; the genres that are important for comparative analysis in the next section are also introduced with sub-headings.
The third part contains the main subject of the research after the information obtained from the first two chapters. Chapter “objectification of women in comic books and sexism " is an introduction. According to certain manga types, the role of female characters and how they are depicted are studied with examples. Then, the super hero in the American comic books was focused on the forces and depictions of female characters, and specific characters were introduced and sampled. The review is based on how these characters are objectified, what kind of costumes they are portrayed in, and what kind of powers they have. How women's characters are drawn with poses on comic books. As a subject, the magical young women and the comic books containing the power of women were mentioned; the Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, known for his strong female character depictions, and the female characters were studied.
The application of the fourth and final part of the study is prepared as a comic book application in the results of the comparisons and reviews made in the thesis. The application is based on manual sketches, drawing in digital environment using Adobe Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint software. Technically, the Japanese comic book (manga) is designed in the form of a fanzin, a 16-page uniform preferred. By diversifying character designs, it is aimed to design women with different physical characteristics closer to reality. The story of the intersection of the lives of three women who face difficulties at home, at work, and at school, and the importance of women's Sisterhood and all kinds of abuse tells how to make sound and stand upright. In the comic book, which deals with the difficulties women live and face in society, it is aimed to raise awareness about these issues by drawing attention to issues such as harassment and sexism.
