In this study, characteristic, dynamics and effects of hunger strikes as a form of action in prisons have been examined.During the 1996-2000 period, political prisoners who are joined mass hunger strikes were discussed.
In the hunger strike, the collective bodies of the subjects meet on an important ground of struggle. In this context, political prisoners are in the struggle to defend their identities and in addition to meeting their demands with potential pressure and threatening elements, publicizing their discomfort through action.Such resistance, whether active or passive, allows the prisoners, over their naked bodies to build an alternative policy and publicity against the biopolitical closure of prisons as a total institution. In this sense, this study, as an alternative social memory study, apart from the offical history, lay claim tomemory.
At the same time, the prisoners that are in the thin line between life and death, weaponized their bodies against the cell system, against all kinds of order where exceptional rule is the rule. In this study, 10 people were interviewed using semi-structured questionnaire to understand the hunger strike action in the ward or cell system. The obtained data were evaluated and interpreted by the case study from qualitative analysis methods.
