Ottoman Empire experienced important changes in the context of modernization activities in the nineteenth century. These changes towards Europe have brought about a number of differentiations in the traditional style of Ottoman consumption. European furniture and decoration products, renewed costumes and goods used in everyday life have influenced Ottoman social life. With the increasing use of European-style products in the Ottoman realm, the appropriate etiquette (âdâb-ı muâşeret) bases have begun to settle in the Ottoman society. This situation, which is seen in the administrative staff, urban and elite sections, has resulted in the appearance of a new Ottoman image unlike the classical one. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the influence of the changes in the consumption culture on shaping both the social life and the new Ottoman identity in the nineteenth century.
