Translated works are one of the most important instruments of literary and cultural interaction
between different cultures and languages. In the course of globalisation, more and more literary
works are being translated into other languages and thus reach a wide audience. Thanks to
translation, many works of Turkish literature have reached readers all over the world, and in the
same way, foreign literary works have reached Turkish readers. Yaşar Kemal, one of the most
translated writers of Turkish literature, is characterised by his cultural elements and Anatolian
narrative style. His works such as ‘Ince Memed’ reflect the local language, idiom and culture of
Anatolia. However, translating such works carries the risk that foreign readers will have difficulty
understanding the text or that the works will be removed from Anatolian culture. The success of
a translation depends on maintaining both the authenticity of the text and the reader's enjoyment
of the work. The role of the translator is the greatest challenge in this process. When transferring
the linguistic and cultural elements of the work into the target language, translators must strike a
balance between preserving the spirit of the text and ensuring the reader's understanding. In
particular, the translation of cultural elements such as proverbs and idioms requires in-depth
cultural knowledge and creativity. According to Schleiermacher, the method chosen for translation
is either to bring the reader closer to the author or to bring the author closer to the reader.
However, both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.
